There was something missing that I couldn’t put my finger on, so I pretty much dismissed the author as “just not my cup of tea”. I had read the first two Temeraire books by Naomi Novik and, while liking the first one, didn’t like them enough to continue the series. Sometimes, special books come from unexpected places.
